چکیده

Abrud river is an aquatic ecosystem exposed to anthropogenic influences exerted by long-term mining. This study examines the level of copper concentrations by assessing both total copper content and ionic forms in surface waters and sediments. These components were studied in 10 control sites located in a section of river that has been exposed to acidic mine water spills and leaks. The partition coefficient (kd) of copper between the liquid and solid phase suspension was calculated, and filtered and unfiltered liquid samples were subjected to analytical laboratory determinations required to create a complete image of the chemical composition of the matrix. The results were integrated into the mathematical model PHREEQC to determine the weight of chemical species of copper. Speciation of copper in sediment was performed using sequential extraction procedure. We conclude that the sites most affected by pollution are those with the highest levels of the bioavailable mobile fraction.

Biogeochemical Cycle of Mercury in Wetlands Ecosystem Affected by Gold Mining in a Semi-Arid Area

Wetlands are essential habitats in the environment since they fulfill a variety of ecological functions and support rich biodiversity. One major characteristic of wetlands is their ability to act as chemical sinks. There have been biogeochemical models developed for wetlands in Europe and North America but these systems differ from those found in South Africa, where most wetlands are riverfed a...

Evaluation of background geochemical speciation of heavy metals in overburden topsoil of bituminous sand deposit area, Ondo state, Nigeria

Metals are ubiquitous within the earth crust. However, the exceptional high-level concentration of heavy metals in the soil due to natural or anthropogenic activities and the chemical forms in which they exist determine the level of risk they portend to the environment. This work was aimed at determining the background level of the presence of seven priority toxic metals (Cr, Ni, Pb, As, Cd, Cu...

Effect of Mining Activities on Structure and Function of Rangeland Ecosystem Using the Landscape Function Analysis (LFA) (Case study: Dareh Zereshk Copper Mine, Yazd, Iran).

This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of copper extraction on the structure and function of rangelands ecosystem around the mine area in Dareh Zereshk, Yazd province, Iran. Three study sites were considered at the specified intervals of the mine (0-200, 200-500 and 500-1000m). This research was conducted from 2012 to 2013. In each location, three linear transects with a length of 50 m...

Distribution of dissolved species and suspended particulate copper in an intertidal ecosystem affected by copper mine tailings in Northern Chile

The coastline near Chañaral in Northern Chile is one of the most highly Cu-contaminated zones in the world due to discharges from mining activities for more than 60 years. The speciation of Cu has been studied to determine the importance of organic complexation in highly contaminated areas, and to assess the likely physiological impacts of Cu on marine organisms. Dissolved Cu concentrations of ...
